Jennifer Isle is taking the emotionally rich, multi-layered creative voice she has used to helm Off-Leash Area’s past mainstage productions and turning it inward for “The Time Is.” Both reflective and introspective, “The Time Is” is a meditation and a challenge for this fraught moment in our time. Exploring what it means to “be” in this volatile point in our cultural history, “The Time Is” unpacks the multiple timelines contained within an individual that contribute to who they are. Traveling a lifeline that brings one person from birth to this present moment in history, Jennifer moves through personal conflicts and desires carrying a perceived gender identity, exploring the territory between “who I am” and “who I’ve been” and navigating the pathways that connect the two.
“The Time Is” immerses the audience in a shifting visual, sonic and felt world, featuring live sound performance and video animation. Long-time OLA collaborator Craig Harris will create a dynamic soundscape combining pre-recorded sounds with synthesized music in a live composition. Off-Leash Area’s Co-Artistic Director Paul Herwig will create live projected animation using Tagtool, an amazing animation app enabling the artist to draw/paint in real time, creating a visually rich, immersive drawn environment that changes moment to moment. The elements of live, improvisatory sound and visual design in “The Time Is” create aheightened responsiveness between Isle, Harris and Herwig, speaking to aworld in which the elements are not necessarily fixed or predictableand illustrating how we as humans have to adapt.
