About The Off-Kilter Program and What's Next:
Off-Kilter is Off-Leash Area’s performance program designed to highlight and support artists with disabilities, and which makes space for and gives voice to artists with disabilities in the design and leadership of the program. Our debut Off-Kilter performance was a Cabaret formatted event that featured 7 artists with disabilities ranging in artistic and creative mediums. As we continue to develop and expand this program, we will be providing artistic development and support to artists in the disability community, bringing attention
to the artists and perspectives of these individuals.
We have a series of community meetings in March to connect and build deeper relationships
with artists and leaders with disabilities and advocates.
Throughout our history, Off-Leash Area has built strong, organic relationships within the disability community. From its collaboration with Blind Inc on its production, Now Eye See You Now Eye Don’t, to having created a fully accessible venue with the Off-Leash Art Box, Off-Leash Area has put individuals and organizations among the disability community at the center of its creative and organizational work. It is through this connection that the development of the Off-Kilter program flourished.
The next Off-Kilter Cabaret is set to premiere November 2023.
About The 2022 Off-Kilter Cabaret: Organ Recital
Our first Off-Kilter Cabaret premiered June 2022 at the Tek Box at the Cowles Center with the theme "Organ Recital". It was a 75-minute-long cabaret-style production, which comprised of seven acts in performing arts forms such as dance, storytelling, theatre, spoken word, and puppetry, all curated by the Off-Kilter Leadership Group and in partnership with Young Dance. "Organ Recital" featured impressive artists Braille, Atlas O Phoenix, Daniel Reiva, Amy Salloway, Pat Samples, and Scott Sorenson, who offered unique views on the theme ranging from hilarious and thought-provoking to heart-breaking and profound. In September of that same year, we also offered an online viewing of the performance for those that were unable to attend in person,
or for anyone who wanted to experience it again!
Off-Kilter Leadership Group:
Amy Salloway, Jon Skaalen, Sam Jasmine, Gabriel Rodreick, and the Off-Leash Area co-artistic directors, Jennifer Ilse and Paul Herwig.
off kilter community meetings
As a veteran performing arts company in the Minneapolis area who’s leadership is made up of 50% people with disabilities, Off-Leash Area is dedicated to making space for people/artists/audiences with disabilities. We encourage folks with disabilities to come discuss their needs and desires from programs like ours. Non-disabled folks are also welcome to join to learn what their community needs and how they can assist. Our conversations will be led by a shared passion in advocacy about artistic diversity and justice, and equitable representation of artists with disabilities both onstage and as arts leaders.
These conversations are also a chance to be in community with each other, all while having a great, sociable time! Your thoughts and identities hold necessary space and will be respected here in relating community.
Meetings are free to attend and refreshments will be provided!
Virtual Options are available as well.
