PSST... (2003)

WINNER OUTSTANDING PRODUCTION AWARD AT THE INAGURAL AMERIPRISE FINANCIAL IVEY AWARDS, MINNEAPOLIS 2005

Psst! first began as a 20-minute three-person masked sketch for the inaugural 2003 presentation of new work in Our Garage. That short piece focused on three central characters, a young couple and their boss in a manufacturing factory, caught in a love triangle, and was based on the world created by Norwegian graphic novelist Jason (Jason's work can be found at mjaumjau.net) Two years later Off-Leash Area presented a full-length production of Psst! with a cast of 13 and an original score for a full run in Minneapolis at the contemporary art center, Franklin Art Works. The performance was widely supported by the comics and Norwegian communities, and was attended by Jason himself who came from Oslo for the opening night performance.

Psst! is a beautifully poetic mask and dance production about Love's struggle to survive in a jealous and hateful world. With a dozen performers who wear unique 360-degree masks, and a wildly imaginative interactive set comprised of paper-covered flats that are painted upon with black ink drawings live during the performance - the very materials of the graphic novel - Psst! takes the audience upon an imaginative and emotional journey akin to the surrealistic world of 30's era black and white cartoons, and the melodrama of Fritz Lang's classic expressionist film, Metropolis.
