Expedition of Coat (and me) (2010)

Performed at O'Shaughnessey Auditorium, campus of St Catharine's University

Commissioned Work

Expedition of Coat (and me) is a personal exploration, inspired by growing up in small town, conservative America in the 70¹s, and then being launched into adulthood with infinitely conflicting guidelines of what it means to be a contemporary woman and a person with integrity in the world. The coat is a metaphor for this upbringing.  It represents everything given through my heritage, culture, family, and community--those things that provide us with a groundedness, for protection, but which can also blind, suffocate, and isolate us.

Part polar explorer, part anime super-heroine, the young woman in Expedition of Coat (and me) reconciles her upbringing, and scales the cliffs of her present to venture towards an unknowable future.
